In my post today we are moving a few kilometers south into the Lilliehookfjord. I took this picture around 2am and it is one of my favorites. I especially like the contrast between the almost black rocks and the glacial ice illuminated by the dull midnight sun.

Today I am starting a series of pictures I took on a trip to Svalbard in 2005.

This one was taken in Magdalenefjord (79° 34’ N, the northernmost point on earth I’ve been to) and shows the outlet of the Waggonway glacier.

The arctic is an amazing and at the same time extremely inhospitable part of our earth. At the same time, it reflects the effects of climate change like hardly any other region. When this picture was taken 16 years ago, it was summer though, but the ice shields of the glacier in Svalbard already looked quite thin for me. I don't even want to imagine what the ice coverage might look like today, in 2021.

Let‘s put more effort into protecting nature and saving our 🌍 !
